Custom Forced Edge

Put your own artwork on the edges of your paperback, so the picture shows when the book is closed.

Your art, on every page edge

You upload one picture for each edge you want to use, and PetrichorPages slices it across every page so the picture shows up when the book is closed.

Enter your license key at checkout so the tool gets added to your license. You’ll find it in the app under License & updates.

Want the dual edge tool too? See the bundle.

How it works

You can add art to the outer edge, the top edge and the bottom edge, or just one or two of them. The tool slices each picture into one thin strip per page based on your page count and trim size. When the book is closed, the strips line up and look like a sprayed edge.

If you add a few pages, change your font size a little or adjust your trim size, the slicing is redone for you. For bigger changes in page count or trim size, check the image size guide so your art is still the right size.

In the app

The tool shows you the exact size each edge needs for your book, in inches, and there’s a chart of art sizes for every page count so you can plan ahead.

You can crop your picture to fit or squeeze it to fit. For the top and bottom edges you can also use a solid color instead of a picture, either from the color picker or by typing in a hex code.

Questions

What do I need?

The PetrichorPages desktop app, version 1.3.0 or later, with an active license on Windows or Mac. Your book needs bleed turned on.

Do I have to slice my picture?

No. Upload one picture per edge and the tool cuts it into one sliver per page for you.

Will it look exactly like the preview?

The picture only comes together when the printed pages are stacked, and print-on-demand trimming varies a little from copy to copy. Because of that, it’s possible for the edge to be trimmed off completely. Colors will also look less vibrant than on screen, because the ink isn’t printed on the edge itself. What you see is the very edge of each printed page. I recommend ordering a proof before you publish.

Will anything show on my pages?

Yes. A thin strip of your picture is printed along the outer margin of every page. That’s how the edge is made, so you’ll see those strips when the book is open. The measurements follow recommended industry standards to allow for the variation in cuts with print on demand.

Can I use forced edges from another company in this software?

No, I’m not partnered with any other forced edge companies at this time. If you’d rather use designs from another company, some of them will apply their edge to your print-ready PDF for you, which you can do with your export.

What kind of picture works best?

Bold shapes and strong contrast. Fine detail and small text get lost, especially on shorter books where the edge is thin.

Does it come with designs?

No, this tool is for your own artwork. Ready-made edge designs are sold separately.

Can I show two pictures on one edge?

That’s the Dual Forced Edge tool. You can get it in the bundle below or add it later. You’ll need the custom edge tool to use the dual edge tool, and you can use your own art for both pictures.

Buy it on its own or as a bundle

Both are one-time purchases tied to your license key. Enter your key at checkout. It’s in the app under License & updates.
